Skilled nursing and nursing homes in Chicago

Skilled nursing is different from assisted living. It's medical care. Usually short-term rehab after a hospital stay, or long-term care for someone who can no longer safely live in a residential setting. Here's how it works in Chicago and how to evaluate a facility.

Short-term rehab vs. long-term skilled nursing

After a qualifying hospital stay, Medicare Part A can cover up to 100 days of skilled rehab (with copays after day 20). Long-term skilled nursing, for people who need round-the-clock nursing care indefinitely, is private-pay, LTC-insurance, or Medicaid once assets are spent down.

How to evaluate a Chicago nursing facility

Look up the CMS five-star rating and read recent state survey reports (Illinois posts them publicly). Ask about staffing ratios on nights and weekends, RN vs LPN vs CNA mix, and turnover. Tour at meal time. Talk to a resident's family in the hallway if you can.

How LegacyAhead helps

We're primarily a placement service for assisted living and memory care, but we know the Chicago-area skilled nursing landscape and can point you to strong facilities, warn you off weak ones, and help you decide whether long-term skilled nursing or memory care is the right setting.

Common questions

Is a nursing home the same as assisted living?
No. Assisted living is residential with support. Nursing homes provide 24/7 skilled medical care. Most people never need long-term nursing home care. They age in place in assisted living or memory care.
Will Medicaid cover a Chicago nursing home?
Yes, once assets are spent down and the resident qualifies medically. The application process is complex; we can refer you to elder law attorneys who handle it well.
